Well, it’s been a while since I’ve talked about my Jenny Craig lawsuit (the suit was dropped) which was the impetus for this blog. My friend sent me the above article yesterday. The article is from last year so apologies that I didn’t jump on this sooner (I have since set up some Google alerts).
SELLER: Jenny Craig
LOCATION: Del Mar, CA
SIZE: 8,000 square feet, 5 bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms
Jenny Craig was big in the 80’s and 90’s when diet trends and aerobics were all the rage and she made BANK! I believe that the profits were way more important to her than the actual product she was selling. There are claims of nutritionists approving their overly processed meals but since the FDA doesn’t regulate the dieting industry they didn’t have to adhere to any “standards.”
Standards like, making sure the overly processed food doesn’t cause digestive problems and gallbladder disease. The ingredients in the meals read like a science experiment more than actual food. The fake fat and the processed meats are really bad for you and can cause all sorts of health problems.
There was a class action suit in 1994 where 360,000 people claimed to get gallbladder disease from their diet and then there was my lawsuit a few years ago that went viral. I almost died and ended up having emergency surgery to remove my gallbladder which had over 1,000 stones in it and the stones were blocking off the ducts to my liver, small intestine and pancreas.
I know I was fine before I started Jenny Craig because I had surgery to remove fibroids and I had MRI’s and a barrage of tests. I was super healthy. Then 9 months later after being on the diet I was dying.
I don’t like to dredge this stuff up but since we just started the summer now everyone is worried about their weight, I want to urge everyone not to diet. Stop the madness. Don’t let these diet companies tell you that you’re not good enough unless you’re thin and that women need to be skinny in order to be okay.
We need to be healthy. I will quote Naomi Wolf:
“A cultural fixation on female thinness is not an obsession about female beauty but an obsession about female obedience.”
When did our culture completely skip over women’s rights and went straight to gay/lesbian and transgender rights?! (note, I am a big supporter of LGBT rights). We need to do something about this and I think one of the first steps is to address how the media and society as a whole views women, especially when it comes to body image. We are constantly shamed for the way we look. The billion dollar dieting industry is just one of those perpetrators.
Jenny Craig was sold off by Nestle a few years back and merged with another fledgling company named “Curves” and she had to shut down many of her stores. Jenny Craig was forced to sell her estate and her horse ranch. I have to say that it’s karma. Karma always has a way of biting you in the ass…always.
When I look at her estate I have a pain where my gallbladder used to be because I think of all the thousands to probably millions at this point of the women who got sick from being on her diet. The money she paid for that huge estate could have been spent helping with clients medical bills. It is my dream that the next owners of the estate tear that shit down and build and organic farm.
Thanks for letting me rant and I hope all of you will think twice about joining a diet program.
