80 years ago today, in my opinion one of the most important events happened to change the course of humanity and the world, forever. That was the invention of Alcoholics Anonymous. I believe AA was divinely inspired.
I’m paraphrasing, but Scott Peck in his book, “The Road Less Traveled” talks about AA and alcoholics saying that God created AA and alcoholics to enlighten the world. I believe that. We recruit our members from the finest nut wards, rehabs and jails and make them spiritual and upstanding citizens. Where else do you see that kind of transformation?
We in AA live our lives by spiritual principles. When we’re wrong, we promptly admit it, we’re honest, of service to others and live with strong morals. Imagine if everyone on the planet lived that way?! We in the program live by example hoping that our enlightenment will rub off on others.
Fundamentally it is a spiritual program where we go from self centered to God centered. In the program we learn to get rid of the “I” or ego and become less significant if you will. This allows us to live in the spiritual world rather than the material world.
I want to thank God, Bill and Bob for creating a program that saves millions of lives on a daily basis. It took this crazy, dramatic, homeless girl and made her into a kind, empathetic, useful and loving human being. For that I will be forever grateful.
