Well, it’s that time of the year that we all dread. Yes, we ate more turkey, cookies, cakes and pies to fill a stadium and our pants are tight. In January we’re full of new promise for the new year to be healthier. It’s also that time of the year where weight loss companies descend on us to sign up for their diets. Millions of us fall into that trap every year.
I find it interesting that companies like Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig aren’t making the money like they used to. Weight Watchers for seven straight quarters has been seeing losses. Jenny Craig was sold off my Nestle and merged with Curves, another struggling chain. The reason? We’ve become more health conscious. There are organic options out there as well as fitness apps that are helping us lose weight and eat healthy…FOR FREE!!!
Which brings me to my biggest problem with Weight Watchers new coaching services is that it’s based on the recovery model of sponsorship. When you sign up for Weight Watchers you get a “coach” and that “coach” is available to you 24/7 – because I mean, when it’s 3am and you gotta have that cheesecake – you really need to call that coach. It’s exploitive and wrong that Weight Watchers has used this recovery model of sponsorship for their financial gain. I know a few things about having a sponsor or what weight watchers refers to as a coach because I’m clean and sober close to 10 years now.
I’ll tell you another thing about Weight Watchers that pisses me off, it’s their new commercials. In the ads they show people who are bored so they eat, are emotional so they eat, etc. I’m glad they’re finally getting to the problem but don’t be fooled by suddenly a huge company cares about your feelings or why you’re emotionally eating…they don’t care. What they care about is your money.
I’ve been to Overeaters Anonymous for both over eating and anorexia. Let me tell you something, Weight Watchers, food is addictive. The behavioral changes you talk about in your ads needs to actually be dealt with by someone who knows addiction or a therapist! I have sponsors in my programs and I can call them 24/7 for FREE! Because recovery is for fun and for free as we say.
This blog was created because of my near death experience while on Jenny Craig. They gave you counselors or “coaches” too who were not equipped to coach a tortoise in turtle in race at a local pub. Not to mention their food was full of chemicals and harmful.
If you feel like you’re eating because of emotional reasons then you may want to look at the reasons why you’re doing that and that you may have an addiction. If so, a 12 step program would be a lot cheaper (free), would give you the support you need (also for free) and you would finally find out why you’re behaving the way you do (priceless). You will never find lasting weight loss until you find out what’s eating you, not what you’re eating.
So, if your New Years resolution is to lose weight, don’t go to programs like Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. Eat healthy and exercise. It’s as simple as that and if you feel you can’t stop your bad eating habits on your own then you should check out an Overeaters Anonymous meeting. Your sanity and your bank account will thank you.
