Beyonce’s “Pretty Hurts” New Video Promoting Healthy Body Image

It is no secret that I loves me some Beyoncé.  Any woman that can get her hair caught in a fan and doesn’t stop performing is a bad ass entertainer.  I wish that I had enough rhythm to pull off a rendition of “Single Ladies” put I can’t.  I love her music and work ethic but now what I love most of all is Beyoncé speaking out about body image. Here are some of the lyrics to “Pretty Hurts” that resonated most with me.

“Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever’s worst
Perfection is a disease of a nation, pretty hurts, pretty hurts
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever’s worst
We try to fix something but you can’t fix what you can’t see
It’s the soul that needs the surgery”

“Blonder hair, flat chest
TV says, “Bigger is better.”
South beach, sugar free
Vogue says, “Thinner is better.”

“Ain’t got no doctor or pill that can take the pain away
The pain’s inside and nobody frees you from your body
It’s the soul, it’s the soul that needs surgery
It’s my soul that needs surgery
Plastic smiles and denial can only take you so far
Then you break when the fake facade leaves you in the dark
You left with shattered mirrors and the shards of a beautiful past”

I believe Beyoncé is saying we’re in a crisis right now and she is trying to shed some light on what our ideas of beauty/weight are.  We shouldn’t be fixing our outsides like the dieting industry wants us to.  We should be feeding our soul and fixing our insides.  Preach it Beyoncé, “It’s the soul that needs surgery.”  I created the Self Worth Diet to also shine a light on this issue.  Maybe Beyoncé and I aren’t so different, except she can sing and dance.
